50 wines to try before you die! - Our Fourteenth wine - Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy 2017 75cl
As well as being a bird sanctuary and a stud for the some of most famously bred horses in Italy, Tenuta San Guido is the only vineyard in Italy to have its own appellation. Up until the 1970s, the family thought it inappropriate to sell wine made with their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in a wine region that only used Sangiovese and so kept it for their own consumption.
Sassicaia was the first "super Tuscan" and remains the most iconic. In numerous blind tastings with top flight Bordeaux wines, it has been declared better or comparable. This famous wine has lingering notes of black fruit and spice with extreme purity showing pedigree elegance and a wonderful balance.
