New Zealand Pinot Noir is probably the best in the world after Burgundy and Felton Road produce probably the best Pinot in New Zealand. Bannockburn must be the furthest south of any of the world’s winemaking regions and is perfectly suited to the vicissitudes of making Pinot, which demands cool temperatures so the grapes don’t get overripe. The vineyards are nestled into small microclimates totally surrounded by mountains, many of which are snow capped all year. Felton Road is committed to biodynamic wines with generous cherry fruit, yet also balance and precision. The wine shows a rich palate yet without any hint of excess. This being a combination of three estate vineyards, the subtleties are manifold, contributing to the complexity rather than getting lost in the blend. The benchmark NZ Pinot Noir.

More Information

Felton Road Beginning with meticulous site selection and vineyard design started in 1991, Felton Road’s story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (Demeter certified) ensures that our fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, while our entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine’s expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of our unique vineyards. Gareth King; Viticulturist, Blair Walter; Winemaker, Nigel Greening; Proprietor. Champagne and Burgundy are the best regions for Pinot Noir followed by New Zealand and Oregon. California, South Africa and Australia are making some great Pinot Noirs as well not forgetting Canada. Pinot Noir makes a noticeably pale wine, but has intense perfume and flavour. When young, its aromas range from freshly crushed raspberries or strawberries to plum jam. With age, Pinot Noir often shows violets, game or truffles.
