Owing to modern genetics, we now know that Primitivo is the same varietal as California’s Zinfandel. It is a notoriously difficult grape because of its uneven ripening. The Fatalone family have been making organic wines in small quantities in their winery on a rocky hilltop with pride for generations and was the first to bottle in 1987 the Gioia del Colle DOC Primitivo as a single grape variety. This intense Primitivo shows berry fruits and sour cherries and plum with balsamic and spicy overtones and is great with roasts or spicy fish. Its affinity with fish, it is said, is due to the marine origin of the rocky land where the vineyards are located. Completely organic.

Primitivo

Primitivo can trace its lineage from the ancient Phoenicians who settled in the province of Apulia (Puglia), the heel of Italy’s boot. It is called Primitivo for its propensity to ripen before all other varietals. If made well, Primitivo tends to be juicy, well structured, and concentrated, with aromas and flavours of ripe blackberries, violets and pepper
