(V) Rasteau is a parish in the southern Rhone valley, located only 15 miles northeast of the justly famous Chateauneuf du Pape. It was awarded independent appellation contrôlée status for its dry red wines only as recently as 2010; this was due to the quality of the wines. The climate here is hot and the terrain somewhat forbidding which pushes the old vines to produce wine of great expressiveness and intensity. The Beaurenard estate can date itself back to 1695 and has been in the Coulon family now for seven generations. Their Rasteau 2015 is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, both classic Chateauneuf grapes.

Highly concentrated. Deep colour with purple reflects. Expressive and complex herbaceous nose with black fruits, blackberry and wild hints of balsamic and garrigue. On the palate, stone fruits, dry fruits, almonds. This is a full, rich Rhône for grown-ups, with a round finish. Good with game, duck and goose.

More Information

The Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern Rhône (referred to in French as Rhône septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (in French Rhône méridional). The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier grapes. The southern sub-region depends on the specific AOC rules, grapes blended into southern Rhône reds may include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault. White wines from the southern Rhône sub-region are blends of several wine grapes. These may include Viognier, Ugni Blanc, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, and Clairette.
