Chardonnay from Meerlust means ‘pleasure of the sea’. The manor house is only 5km from False Bay. In the warm summer months the vineyards are refreshed by ocean breezes and evening mists which is important – chardonnay is not a grape that is at its best in too warm a climate. Meerlust Chardonnay shows a deep yellow colour with intense of aromas of honey, lemons and limes with hints of creaminess. On the palate, notes of butter, roasted hazelnuts, nougat, marzipan and white chocolate. Long finish. Our regular readers will remember that our second wine was Meerlust’s Rubicon which used Bordeaux varietals. The elegance of this chardonnay bridges Stellenbosch and Burgundy too but at a fraction of the price of the old world wine.

Chardonnay
Whenever fledgling wine regions have sought to establish themselves on the international stage they have planted Chardonnay. It is everywhere – from England to India and everything in between. The vanilla-scented, creamy examples which sparked such demand in the 1980‘s have moved on, but Chardonnay still has endless possibilities ranging from crisp and flinty, biscuity and toasty to unctuous and buttery. From easy drinking through to super-serious, there are few grapes which reflect so clearly the climate in which they‘re grown or the hands of the winemaker.
