Thelema is the highest vineyard, in terms of both elevation and esteem, in Stellenbosch, itself South Africa’s most famous wine region. Perched near the top of the Helshoogte Pass, vineyards are dominated by a spectacular mountain range and the altitude and ocean breezes provide the coolness so necessary for good Chardonnay. The estate has been practising organic methods, since inception, over 20 years. Their 2015 Chardonnay is golden yellow, with an aromatic, complex nose of lime marmalade, guava, melon fruit and toasty oak nuances. The palate is creamy and rounded, packed with luscious tropical fruit flavours, a delicious mineral streak and well integrated, nutty oak. A soft and succulent finish.

An organic approach to viticulture is followed, but the estate is not certified as being organic. No pesticides are used, yields are kept very low and strict canopy management is used.

Thelema

Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains on the wilder side of Stellenbosch, where the vineyards are at higher elevation and cooler thus producing fresher wines such as the prized Cabernet.

Chardonnay

Whenever fledgling wine regions have sought to establish themselves on the international stage they have planted Chardonnay. It is everywhere – from England to India and everything in between. The vanilla-scented, creamy examples which sparked such demand in the 1980‘s have moved on, but Chardonnay still has endless possibilities ranging from crisp and flinty, biscuity and toasty to unctuous and buttery. From easy drinking through to super-serious, there are few grapes which reflect so clearly the climate in which they‘re grown or the hands of the winemaker.
