Domaine Christian Clerget

Christian's philosophy is simple: the quality of a wine is contained within its vines. The Côte de Nuits area offers the ideal land on which to grow Pinot Noir grapes. It is up to the winegrower to understand how to make the most of the land and vines, as naturally as possible, letting the grape bunches breathe by removing just enough of the excess leaves and immature grapes. Christian aims for low yields and optimal fruit: mature, healthy grapes.

These six hectares are concentrated around the estate’s fermentation cellar in Vougeot in the Côte de Nuits. The Clerget estate has seen four generations of winegrowers in their vineyards of Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-St-Denis, Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée, where Pinot Noir grapes reach the pinnacle of their glory. Christian and Isabelle Clerget live within the heart of their vineyard, in harmony with their land, which they consider as an extension of their garden. They know each leaf by heart and go to great lengths to respect each vine in order to produce the best wine:that which offers the truest expression of this land, without ever deceiving nature.

Pinot Noir

Champagne and Burgundy are the best regions for Pinot Noir followed by New Zealand and Oregon. California, South Africa and Australia are making some great Pinot Noirs as well not forgetting Canada. Pinot Noir makes a noticeably pale wine, but has intense perfume and flavour. When young, its aromas range from freshly crushed raspberries or strawberries to plum jam. With age, Pinot Noir often shows violets, game or truffles.
