Rich red colour, hints of fresh cherries, and dark stone fruits such as plum and pomegranate. The finish has tones of mocha and cassis, with soft silky vanilla tannins from the predominantly French and American oak, which also adds to its long, smooth finish.

Now planted nearly everywhere there are vines, growers the world over know that its distinctive black fruit flavours are a sure sell in export markets. Fairly low maintenance, it flourishes wherever there is warmth and sunlight. The coolest of marginal climates give green, capsicum flavours; in warmer climates the fruit flavours become richer and blacker, with a savoury ‘graphite‘ edge. Despite having been accused of encouraging homogeneity in international wine styles, it undeniably produces some of the greatest red wines in the world.
