Hints of exotic spices, kirsch and plummy black fruit on the nose of this wine. The palate is abundant sweetness with a good tannic structure, spices, oak and dark, quite pruney notes to the fruit.

Made from grapes picked from 50 to 80 year-old Mencia vines and then aged for eight months in a combination of French and American oak barrels.

More Information

The wine region of Bierzo is a small, rural and remote ancient region in the north-western corner of Castilla y León, touching the eastern border of Galicia. Up until recently, it remained unknown to the international wine markets. However, thanks to the wave of investment and innovation that swept many parts of Spain in the late 1990s, the wine region of Bierzo now counts as one of the country’s rising stars, on a par with other wine hotspots, such as Rueda, Penedès, Toro and Jumilla.

Mencia

Now proven to have no relation to Cabernet Franc, low yields, the right soils and good vinification are now resulting in interesting wines made from the Mencia variety. Most widely planted in northwestern Spain, particularly Bierzo, it can produce wines which are appealingly full-bodied and concentrated, with attractive ripe berry characters supported by a good solid tannin structure, frequently softened by oak-ageing.
