The region of Bierzo in Spain’s Atlantic North West has heralded a revolution in red wine production in recent years, producing reds of depth, concentration and gorgeous minerality. The predominant grape is Mencia, which is reminiscent of cabernet franc in its fragrance. The bush vines that go into the making of Pittacum are on average 85 years old, planted at high altitudes and on red soil and clay slopes. Hints of exotic spices, kirsch and plummy black fruit on the nose. The palate is abundant sweetness with a good tannic structure, herbs, spices, oak and dark, quite pruney notes. This is a gorgeous, crowd pleaser of a red, perfect for sharing in the festive season.
