50 wines to try before you die! - Our Sixteenth wine - Gavi di Gavi, Lugarara, La Giustiniana, Piedmont 2018/19 75cl
In the wake of the success of their reds and of course the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio, Italian whites are also having something of a renaissance. A refreshing alternative to the classic white grape varieties, Gavi di Gavi is juicy, delicate and approachable and is ideal as an aperitif or with salads, fish and chicken dishes.
La Giustiniana is owned by the Lombardini family and has 30 hectares of vineyard in production situated at 300-500 metres above sea level in the heart of Rovereto in Gavi. They makes two single vineyard Gavis.
(V) and (VG) Gavi di Gavi, Lugarara has a straw-yellow hue. Aromas of white fruit, stone fruit and lime zest with a subtle persistent bouquet of green apples. A charming wine with the structure of a Burgundy yet the elegance of light summer wine. Its being low in alcohol is an added bonus compared to the new world whites. Acidity is fresh and on the finish pleasant almond notes linger.

Cortese
The grape for Gavi, one of Italy‘s best known whites, Cortese is grown almost exclusively in Piemonte, particularly around Alessandria. Usually vinified unoaked, at its best, it is aromatic but minerally, with good acidity even when fully ripe. It is also seen in Lombardy and the Veneto where the resulting wines are crisp and fresh.
