50 Wines to try before you die! - Forty Fourth wine - Château Soussans, Margaux 2011

Saturday 17th December 2016

An equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it's a high quality second wine from an estate farmed by the same family since the 1920s, using organic methods. Delicious with duck, goose, turkey or cassoulet.

50 Wines to try before you die! - Forty Eighth wine - D'Oliveiras Madeira, Colheita Boal 1993

Tuesday 27th December 2016

Fortified, as its sister Port is, it bears no resemblance to port wine whatsoever but is unique, delicious, nutty and ginger and can be either sweet or dry. At Eton Vintners, we have many types but this D'Oliveiras Boal is semi-sweet and has a well-defined bouquet with notes of marmalade, nutmeg and walnut. On the palate, medium-bodied with fine tannins and, walnut-infused and honeyed fruit and a prickly finish. A very special wine for this special time of the year.

50 wines to try before you die! - Our Forty First Wine - Chateau Filhot, Sauternes 2005 75cl

Saturday 10th December 2016

Rich in the mouth, mango, tropical fruit, honeyed richness yet nevertheless with a pleasing freshness that make it so versatile. A most agreeable pudding wine; a substitute for dessert; an accompaniment with foie gras - Filhot is dry enough to work even an aperitif. Truly a wonderful wine.
