`Doble Pasta` Manchuela Garnacha Tintorera, Cien y Pico, Manchuela - Castilla La Mancha, 2019/20 75cl

Made from 100 plus year old vines in the heart of Spain. Full of blueberries, damsons and cherries, lavender and fresh tea on the nose. On the palate, soft, supple, intense and flavourful with sweet, sharp raspberry fruit and gentle spice, supported by tannins. The powerful fruit character reverberates on the long finish. Ideal with a good steak.

Garnacha

Grenache is more familiar in the world with its French name, Garnacha as it is known in Spain probably originated in the North of Spain. It is now found, under a host of regional names, in Sardinia (as Cannonau), Greece, Israel, North Africa, France, Spain and Cyprus. Adoring the Mediterranean sun, it can accumulate up to 16 degrees of potential alcohol while still on the vine. It thrives in hot, dry and windy conditions grown as a bush vine. Less typically for a warm climate grape it has a thin skin. This means it lacks, at least at normal yields, the depth of colour for many red wines, but makes it well-suited to soft and fruity rosés and rosatos. The concentrated fruit from old, low-yielding vines like those in Priorat and Châteauneuf-du-Pape can, however, give wines of powerful intensity and deep colour, which demand cellaring. Garnacha‘s affinity for hot hillsides has also led it to California and Australia, where it was the most-planted grape until it was overtaken by Shiraz in the 1960‘s."

Cien y Pico have four vineyards on the Meseta (or 'plateau') of Castilla-La Mancha. This plateau is extremely dry and the deep-rooted old vines thrive in the low vigour soils. In summer, the intense sun and cool nights at this altitude of nearly 1000 metres ripen the grapes to perfection. The old bush-trained vines give excellent concentration and flavour to the wines, but yields are very low, around three tonnes per hectare. Garnacha Tintorera is the Spanish name for the Alicante Bouschet variety and is one of only a few varieties that has red juice.
