Unlike Bordeaux where production is dominated by the Chateaux, wine from Burgundy tends to be produced by a multiplicity of viticulteurs whose small holdings tend to mean small produced quantities (and therefore, unfortunately, often high prices). Yet the expression of Pinot Noir from Burgundy can be one of the most intensely sublime on the planet. Production has also been affected in recent years by unpredictable weather with frosts, hailstones and floods stressing the vines. The 2010 vintage was saved by a warm September and the wines are good. Domaine Jerome Sordet dates back to the eighteenth century and is therefore one of the oldest in Pommard. It consists of only 12 hectares. Deep dark-red, intense and violent bouquet of blackcurrant and violets. Predominant astringency enhanced by marked acidity and mellowness. Full-bodied, rich, dry tannins and a velvety finish. Perfect with charcuterie, salmon, tuna, stews and poultry.

Pinot Noir

Champagne and Burgundy’s is the best region for Pinot Noir followed by New Zealand and Oregon. California, South Africa and Australia are making some great Pinot Noirs as well not forgetting Canada. Pinot Noir makes a noticeably pale wine, but has intense perfume and flavour. When young, its aromas range from freshly crushed raspberries or strawberries to plum jam. With age, Pinot Noir often shows violets, game or truffles.
