Pinot Gris Going by its Italian name, this is the UK‘s number one wine and enjoying roaring popularity. One of the many offspring of the genetically irresponsible Pinot Noir, the grape skins vary from grey to pink, which, if macerated, gives a coppery hue to the wine. Between 1990 and 2000, plantings of Pinot Grigio in Italy almost doubled. The vast majority of production comes from fertile plains in the Veneto in the north-east of the country, where often grapes are picked early to retain their acidity and before much flavour has time to develop. To some, this is all that white wine should be, crisp, mineral and spritzy; but further north in Friuli Venezia-Guilia and the Alto Adige, later harvests and lower yields ensure that the grape‘s unique flinty, gun-smoke and delicate pear fruit emerges. These wines are subtle, elegant and characterful. In the grape‘s other homeland of Alsace it goes by the name of Pinot Gris. Here, huddled in the sun behind the Vosges Mountains, it can develop deep colour and mouthfeel bordering on the oily. This is a grape with a remarkable adaptability – successful and delicious versions can now be found from such diverse regions as Transylvania, New Zealand, and much of Eastern and Northern Europe.
