Created, unusually, by crossing a vinifera variety with one native to North America, Vidal has three qualities which endear it to Canadian icewine champions: thick skin, slow, steady ripening and extraordinary hardiness to winter weather. Dry Vidals show an attractive currant-leaf character but it is the piercingly pure fruit flavours in the ultra-sweet juice of frozen grapes which makes this variety stand out. .
